Help Save Our Wildlife
This conservation opportunity has arisen from the combined efforts of three private land owners near the historic village of Derby in north east Tasmania. The three concerned owners have cooperated to form the Derby Voluntary Wildlife Reserve, to protect the unique fauna and flora which co habits this beautiful part of the world.
Logging destruction Logging in Tasmania has claimed extensive old forest which has been converted into Pine or Eucalypt plantations. Forests, hundreds of years old, have been destroyed for the Japanese wood chip industry. In the plantation process, old forests are logged; residual under storey material is then pushed into windrows and left to burn for several days. Poison baits are laid out to exterminate any animals left in the region to discourage them from eating the new plantation saplings. Light aircraft are employed to drop herbicides from above, which contaminates waterways in the plantation region. In Tasmania, some of the more fortunate animals affected by logging plantation, find refuge in private property reserves such as this one in Derby. The Derby Voluntary Wildlife Reserve has helped to prevent logging interests from decimating the reserve land and the adjoining State forest. This is possible under the provisions of the Tasmanian Government DPIW Land for Wildlife conservation scheme www.dpiw.tas.gov.au because the adjoining area must be recognised as water catchments for the reserve and cannot be logged.
Derby region In October each year, the picturesque village of Derby hosts the world famous Derby River Derby gala day. In recent years this charming town has attracted many trendy city dwellers looking to secure a property in an idyllic country location. The village has been revitalised with new coffee shops and specialty shops. Property values will continue to appreciate. For any person contemplating a move to a low stress, peaceful, beautiful country location complete with bird song and nearby flowing river, this property has it all. It will appeal to those people with an ambition to actively protect and secure our natural heritage. Both neighbours are similarly committed to protecting endangered flora and fauna.
A special property One of the land owners now resides in Europe and is looking for a special buyer. This unique eleven acre property lies nestled in a valley between two mountains and forms part of the fifty acre reserve. The property is located above the village of Derby and the Derby River. The two bedroom, two storey dwelling is constructed from a combination of mud bricks and timber. The property has sustainable water sources comprising a creek and a spring, as well as the surrounding catchments. A second studio dwelling is situated in forest at the beginning of an ancient tree fern glade and scenic walk. This follows a creek bed which runs through the length of the property. It is the current owners wish that a prospective buyer should be willing to sign a caveat stipulating that this property may never be logged or have trees removed, and will endeavour to maintain and respect the wildlife reserve along with the two supportive neighbours.
Investment opportunity From a property investment perspective, this unique property will continue to appreciate in value. This will be further emphasised by the decision of the Tasmanian Government to not allow the issuing of building permits to land owners with properties less than ten acres in area. Less than ten acre blocks are being made redundant and are not a viable proposition for most Tasmanians. Many ten acre blocks will be destined for the wood chip pile. This region of Tasmania is the ultimate get away from it from it all holiday destination or permanent get away residence.
Support needed The reality of the present situation in Tasmania is that our native flora and fauna may only be saved by the combined efforts of concerned individuals and community groups. Individuals willing to invest in real estate blessed with precious wildlife assets are urgently needed. There is no other option to protect our wild life in the current political climate. If we let these rare opportunities go there will be no second chance. Our heritage will be destroyed. Like minded individuals willing and motivated to support the provisions of Land for Wildlife scheme please show your interest at mail@ausfern.com. Please help support the Derby Voluntary Wildlife Reserve.
