CARROWONG FAUNA SANCTUARY |
The Short Story
Rob Mortimer and Carmel Lacy purchased "Carrowong Fauna Sanctuary" around 9 years ago in a bid to preserve one of the last remaining Cassowary habitats in Australia.
Join the abundant wildlife such as the rare and endangered cassowary, red legged pademelons and bandicoots, green and striped possums, musky rat kangaroos and many small ground dwellers along with the spectacular array of birdlife.
Rare native plants, towering fan palms and huge tropical vines coil like serpents on the forest floor slivering silently skywards into the lush green forest canopy entwined in a peace and mystical light that is beyond description.
Live as nature intended in a cottage with rustic jetty overlooking a lotus and lily filled pond. Alive with many different species of frogs, turtles and the occasional platypus.

A private wildlife sanctuary and lifestyle paradise yet its potential for a sustainable small scale true eco resort/retreat that incorporates solar power, composting loos and low impact buildings constructed to integrate into the surrounding natural environment is enormous!
This is its potential - either for like minded people to simply continue to live and enjoy a solace rarely found in today’s busy world or to develop a truly ‘eco conscious’ retreat with its own natural attractions - an opportunity to share, for those privileged guests, one of the world’s most beautiful sanctuaries - for man and nature.
It is a forest link of breathtaking diversity, where species diverge north and south in an area known as the "Blackmountain corridor". The forest is extremely rare (category 3B ‘complex mesophyll vine with predominant fan palms’), unlogged and still in pristine condition. Possibly the last upland fan Palm forest on earth!

The
cottage is situated on approximately 1 acre of clearing at the top of a
crest to allow for drainage in the wet season and faces north to
optimize year round sunlight. Established lawns and gardens including an
underground sprinkler system are set within a rainforest perimeter
together with a large dam and rock pool especially formed as a rare frog
breeding area. The architect designed cottage and office features a jetty/landing at the dam water’s edge providing a serenity that has to be seen and felt to be believed. Drinking water is sourced from natural rainfall from the roof or pumped from the perennial spring fed creeks. General purpose water for the cottage is accessed directly from the dam via a 24 volt pump. A bore is also in place as a back up water supply. Power is derived from a 24 volt solar system with a large lister generator backup. All remote controls for the solar power are easily accessed from a deck behind the cottage. A further large house site is already formed within the cottage perimeter area. A general purpose steel constructed shed with workshop and undercover parking for 3 vehicles is also within easy access of both the cottage and future house site. There is a myriad of walking tracks established throughout the front of the block with an undercover BBQ area (5 x 11 metres) situated under a canopy of fan palms which easily accommodates up to 20 people comfortably. |

THE
BUSINESS Nocturnal wildlife spotlighting safaris and walks are conducted by experienced wildlife guides over selected walking tracks within Carrowong Fauna Sanctuary. These tours are conducted throughout the year. This business has proved enormously popular with international visitors particularly the European and American market. After conducting these tours over many years Rob and Carmel, it is fair to say are not running the operation to its fullest potential. Two small nature based companies use Carrowong on a daily basis. This involves no input from Rob or Carmel, there is just an entry fee and the groups are self guided. There is great potential in the future for a similar use of the property by other tour operators. |
